Reading- Students focus on specific comprehension skills through each story we share. They also have the opportunity to read chapter books of their choice to help them grow as readers and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Vocabulary- Students are introduced to 6 new words related to each Reading story and are quizzed on them as part of each Reading Quiz.
Writing-Skills are enhanced through a variety of writing projects throughout the school year. The children learn to truly love these authentic writing opportunities as they share their work with others!
Grammar-We focus on many elements of grammar every other week with our Daily Language practice. We also focus on a single grammar skill or part of speech within the each reading unit.
Spelling-At the start of each new lesson, students are given a pre-test of that lesson's spelling words. If they spell all words correctly it will count as their quiz grade and they are exempt from homework for that lesson. Students are still responsible for completing any class work related to the lesson.
Math- Throughout the school year a variety of 4th grade skills are reviewed daily with our Spiraled Math work. Basic multiplication skills are also reinforced with weekly timed drills as students work to "Scoop" up their facts. Focused lessons in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, fractions, decimals, and geometry are reviewed and introduced this year.
Religion-Students learn about what it means to be a disciple and the meaning of 10 Commandments in everyday life. We not only continue to learn about our faith, but live it each day.
Social Studies- New Jersey is at the heart and soul of the 4th grade curriculum. See Mrs. Hegedus's class page for more information.
Science-Grade 4- Classification of living organisms, animal habitats, niches, and adaptations, plant parts, photosynthesis, and adaptations, and the Coral Reef and Rain Forest ecosystems are the main focus throughout the year.
Science- Grade 5- Students are introduced to the Scientific Method and our focus is on the Human body and its systems.
